Lots of people have asked me, is Tim Geitner stupid? Well, yes, if you think you might be a political appointee someday, you have to get your taxes right. Or at least in the right ballpark. On the other hand, I here paying taxes is pretty complicated when you work at the IMF.

But really Tim -- TurboTax???

Three democratic appointees have now run into trouble with taxes in their confirmation processes; two of them have withdrawn as a result. Come on guys! Stop worrying about looking elitist and hire an accountant!

Okay, so the risk of getting audited is low, as is the probability of being nominated to a position requiring senate confirmation. (although probably not as low for Daschle as for the average citizen) So what can we infer about the value of these positions, if given the hassle of making sure they are filed correctly (not to mention paying all those pesky extra thousands of dollars in taxes) these three individuals made the choice to risk it? Is there some expected value calculation we can do on this? Help me, econgirl!

Elizabeth, love the blog. You know I really miss working with you but the blog helps. I can imagine what keeps you busy and what you're working on and all that jazz! I've included my blog address: less substance and just my updates and occasional musings. Good luck in all you do!
